Overview

The University of Western São Paulo (UNOESTE) is engaged in the excellence of higher education, promoting basic and applied research, and developing activities of extension, socially involved in meeting the needs of the community.

Mission

To develop education under an innovative and critical-reflexive environment, through the practice of teaching, research and extension to the community in the several fields of the scientific, humanistic and technological knowledge, contributing to the formation of citizens and professionals committed to high values of social and environmental responsibility.

Today

The University of Western São Paulo (UNOESTE) is the largest higher educational institution in Presidente Prudente city and surrounding area. It is recognized by the first-grade infrastructure standards and by the high qualified faculty members, whose activities have obtained outstanding projection throughout Brazil.

UNOESTE is currently composed by two campuses (Campus I, and Campus II) and an Experimental Farm. It offers undergraduate courses in 54 different fields of knowledge, as well as more than 100 graduate diploma/certificate and degree courses, 4 Master of Science degree programs, 2 PhD programs and distance education courses. All of them have obtained recognition and recommendation by the Brazilian Ministry of Education, INEP and CAPES, which are, respectively, the Official Organisms for Evaluation of Higher Education in Brazil.

A Brief History

The history of the University of Western São Paulo is strictly related to the foundation of its Maintaining Institution, named Presidente Prudente Educational and Cultural Association, also known as APEC, on January 10 th , 1972. The establishment of APEC is recognized as a pioneer and prospective initiative to promote higher education in the West part of São Paulo State, Brazil.

In order to achieve its global mission, the first School to be established was the College of Sciences, Languages and Education, on October 21st, 1972, emphasizing the formation of teachers and specialists to develop their professional career in basic education. The following steps included the organization of the College of Health Sciences and other fields of knowledge with strong regional and national demand.

As a consequence of the high diversity and excellence degree of its courses and educational programs, the University of Western São Paulo was established and officially recognized by the Brazilian Government through the Ministry of Education Decree n.83, on February 12th, 1987.

The employment of a challenging and persevering profile, which was initially drawn by its founders, allied to democratic and participative actions, and the crucial decision of strong investments in high technology and first class human resources have enabled UNOESTE to achieve outstanding levels in educational, cultural, scientific and social activities in benefit of the community.

Infrastructure Aspects

Academic activities are carried out in Campus I, Campus II and the Experimental Farm, which comprise approximately 3.278.685 square meters altogether.

UNOESTE includes a huge amount of classrooms, clinics, specialized laboratories, hospitals, experimental fields, libraries, among many other administrative offices, which correspond to a built area of 326.148.57 square meters.

Around the 19.000 students, 2.000 skilled personnel, including 700 faculty members, mostly, who have already concluded master/PhD programs, develop their activities in an innovative and cultural academic atmosphere.

All the University physical structure, services and human resources are available for the benefit and welfare of the community.
